Thomas Watson

Newcastle maker from 1793-1845.

Makers mark  Clearer to see than photograph!

The bow has a betrothal monogram of WF+CM, otherwise the tongs are plain. Although fiddle pattern in essence, they are less sharply shaped than usual and the bowls are quite narrow and shallow. They are hallmarked for Newcastle with an oval duty mark but no date letter, also the lion has a pointed base. This combination means they are either 1787 - 1790 or 1800-1803, but as Watson didn't register his mark until 1793 this makes them date from 1800-1803. This also tallies with Watson's 1800 mark as the earlier one was larger and had a pellet as was the later mark. They weigh 1 1/4 ounces and are 5 1/2 inches long.
