Nathaniel Smith & Co
These tongs are from 1787 and are very early Sheffield made tongs. They are in the same style as cast tongs but actually made in one piece and shaped. The silver is pierced rather than cast. They are very thin and light, weighing only 3/4 ounce. Remarkably they have survived in perfect condition. The bow has two inscriptions; a betrothal inscription E over I * C which is probably original and a later script inscription, CB Feb 4 1906. The hallmarks are stamped inside the bow.
