Jonathan Perkins I

Makers mark    Poorly struck

These tongs are fairly unusual in that the pierced arm is at right angles to the bowls and bow. They have acorn bowls Jonathan Perkins I registered his mark in 1772 and by 1777 was working in partnership with his son, so these tongs must date somewhere between. The mark is slightly misstruck making the P difficult but not impossible to read. There is a monogram to the bow which has been applied on a circular plate. This plate covers a repair to the bow in the cartouche, presumably where an earlier monogram was too deeply cut to erase. The monogram 'M H B' is in a fairly florid script but well engraved.
