Makers Mark     Registered 1763

Hallmarked in Glasgow, these tongs date to between 1763 and 1784, probably earlier rather than later in that period,  and are rather fine quality.

They were bought on from an American source, who informed me she bought them in the Portobello Road on visit to London around 1985, so they are much travelled but still in pristine condition. The inscription on the bow, M over I + T, is not of the same quality as the tongs. The bow is of an interesting shape being flared in the centre and has a thread edge.  The hallmarks are centre bow on the inside. The AG is similar to that of Alexander Gairdner, however the shape of the punch differs and the tongs are Glasgow not Edinburgh.
